Where, in this land of Buuz and khuushuurs, can one find a decent
burger, either of the chicken burger variety, or the hamburger variety?
Surprisingly enough, there are a lot of choices around town here in UB.
Recommended:
Hamburger:
Probably the best burger you can buy these days in UB, is at the new MB restaurant located near Grand Irish, south of Sukhbaatar square. The burger is a real western style burger, in western proportions, and it’s not cheap, but it comes at a reasonable, and comparable price. The owner of this new (and first micro-brew) restaurant is from Mongolia, but he studied in Germany so he also knows how to make a nice micro-brew too, which comes in several varieties. I also recommend you try that as well.
Chicken:
Kenny Roger’s is the first real attempt at an American fast-food restaurant trying the market out here in UB. It’s located near the great circus, just down from the State Department store, across from Small Irish, on Seoul St. In America, this food establishment competes directly with Boston Market, which, in America, is mis-managed, so Kenny Roger’s competes with it reasonably well. But it was probably a poor decision to bring this fairly high-end fast-food restaurant here. A fast food restaurant is not supposed to be one of the most expensive restaurants in the city, and the sparse patronage probably attests to this. But the food, when I first went there, was quite tasty, and really was of genuine American standards. But the second time I went, the food wasn’t nearly as good, so go soon, because the food quality is going down-hill, and soon, it may be closed up.
Dave’s Sexy Jazz Lounge. Dave serves a genuine American style chicken burger loaded up with fries. He also serves a genuine, all-natural milkshake. And for what you get, the price is reasonable.

Hamburger:
American Burger, which is located just behind the State Department Store. This is becoming a popular locale, but I’ve found their service to be deplorable. I asked the owner about it, and he just gave me a dopey grin, so I don’t recommend this place
Big Burger should be renamed “Microscopic-burger”, frequently also suffers from bad service. The taste is just OK, and it’s over-priced for what it is. I love how it boasts, “real American taste”, that’s funny, HA! Just like King coffee boasts “real American flavor”, (with “flavor” being of the British spelling, right on the packet). Also, I’ve been there when they were open, but they were actually out of hamburgers (how strange I thought that was).
Nyra café has maybe the worst service in town, for a café that’s as popular as it is. I guess foreigners just don’t care about how they get treated here.
Berlin Burger is not even good according to actual Berliners. They use some kind of a French dressing type of sauce, which really tastes cheap.
“Fast Food” restaurant is also not recommended. Using cabbage instead of lettuce is not a good substitute, and the overall taste is well…horrible.
Chicken:
BBQ Chicken is not that bad when you consider the price is kind of cheap. However, the quality of the chicken has really gone down-hill since I first ate there 2 ½ years ago. I like extra mustard whenever I go there, because it otherwise drowns out the other bad qualities. The fries aren’t much to write home about, either.
OK, well that covers some of the many choices there are here in UB. I hope this helps you while you’re in town deciding where to eat some good ‘ol Western-style food.
