South of Peace Avenue next to the Master foods supermarket on Seoul
Street is the Pacific Japanese restaurant. Appropriately, for it is The
south Pacific, you enter the restaurant via a water-themed staircase at
the back of the first floor.
The walls are blue, the ceiling’s blue and the wall decorations resemble seaweed. To me, the décor and the music of an eating establishment are important. I like music to vary. I like it to be quieter during the day and louder at night and I think that most restaurateurs would make a concerted effort to match the music and décor to the establishment and its cuisine. Lady GaGa in Delhi Darbar wouldn’t be good for digestion, just as Altan Urag playing live in The Corporate over lunch would rub many a suit-clad, business card waving high-flyer the wrong way. Well the décor certainly suits south Pacific, but the music I’m not so sure about. For some unknown reason, Bryan Adams is on repeat. His never ending stream of songs will make you do one of two things: you’ll either want to wash him right out of your hair or you’ll fall in love with the wonderful guy…I suppose it all depends on the mood you’re in or what he (Bryan) does for you (if it’s everything, then I suppose it’s OK). The Pacific attracts a sophisticated crowd, one that would seem to appreciate good music, which is why I’m surprised by the incessant sound of Bryan Adams’ music. But having said that, the chairs are comfortable, the food’s great and the service staff do make you feel like you’re on a boat as they swan around in waistcoats.
The fresh, generous garden salads are mayonnaise-free, big enough for two and go perfectly with the enormous mantuun buzz. The meat and vegetable stir-fry dishes served with rice are full of flavor, the chicken and noodle stir fry is delicious and the udon noodle dish with beef is nice but a little too sweet for my liking. South Pacific is definitely the place to go if you feel like an enchanting evening or some happy talk.
