We All Need a Bit of Drama in Our Lives… Print E-mail

Not the ‘my neighbor drove over my cat, how can I get revenge?’ kind of drama, but the light-filled north facing canteen located in Ulaanbaatar’s Drama Theatre kind of drama.

This place sells some of the best Mongolian food I’ve tasted. It’s simple, clean and definitely one of my favorite cheap eats in UB, so go on…jump on this oil and salt train and get some drama into your life.

What’s not to like: it’s cheap and I’m a volunteer, it’s hard to find and I’m from a city well known for its ‘if it’s hard to find then it must be cool’ motto (Melbourne, Australia) and it’s pink. Well a shade of orange pink. I love UB’s pink buildings. They really brighten up the city. The world needs more pink buildings.

Drama (my name for it as I’m not sure if the café has a name) has about 20 tables and I think is only open at lunchtimes.

There’s no signage, so just follow my directions to a mountain of tsuivan that will leave you asleep under your desk and desperate for water all afternoon.

Enter through Drama’s north facing door, not the front. Nod politely to the uniform-clad receptionist as you pass by and turn left down the long, dark, creaky corridor. If the doors are open, peak in and have a look into Drama’s beautiful rooms. Walk up three flights of stairs, and there you have it: café Drama.

Ordering food is a two-step process, the menu is in Mongolian and no one can understand a word of English. First you choose and pay for your meal at the counter closest to the entrance. The menu is written on a blackboard to the right of the cash register, and it (the menu) changes daily. NB: the cash register is a retro-lovers delight. Once you’ve ordered and paid, head across to the other counter, the one in front of the kitchen, and repeat your order to the kitchen staff. After a few minutes your meal will be ready to collect from the second counter.

I hope you all appreciate drama as much as I do; it certainly raises the curtain on Mongolian cuisine.
