An earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale was
observed in the countryside, on March 6, at around 8:33am local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at the north east slope of the Altankhokhii Mountain, located on the borders of Uvs, Bayan-Olgii, and Khovd provinces. No human casualties were reported because the earthquake happened in remote unpopulated areas in the west of Mongolia. But almost all populated residential settlements in those three provinces felt the tremors to a small degree. “It could have been strong enough to damage residential apartment blocks. Luckily no materialistic damage was reported,” said D.Monkhoo, a research officer of the Astronomy and Geophysics Survery Center.
The earthquake lasted for about 40 seconds, local emergency officials of Khovd province, B.Buyantor, told the media. |
