Four people have so far died from A (H1N1) influenza in the country within two weeks since the first detection of the virus.
“The number of A (H1N1)-infected people are increasing day by day and so there is a high possibility that the spread of swine flu could reach epidemic level,” said the Health Minister Lambaa when visiting WHO officials. As of October 29 morning, 527 people are tested infected, the vast majority of them in Ulaanbaatar City. To date, the virus is detected in twelve provinces out of 21 provinces of the country. All four patients who died were found to have swine flu, but the health ministry said it was not immediately clear whether the virus was the direct cause of death. Four others were in serious condition in hospital. The government has banned all cultural and sports events until further notice and has extended holidays for secondary school students by a week until November 5 due to the rapid spread of the virus. The Government has allocated MNT6.4 billion to tackle the spread of the H1N1 virus infection. The money will be spent on preventive measures, better facilities for diagnosis, buying medicines, disinfection programs, and treatment for those affected. On October 29, the Health Ministry received tamiflu sufficient for 45,000 Mongolians. The World Health Organization donates the tamiflu for the use of local hospitals and the National Center for Communicable Diseases. |
