Pro-Enkhbayar, Anti-Elbegdorj TV Coverages Dominate, GlobeInter

More and more anti-Elbegdorj news programs were broadcasted, according to Globe International, a non-governmental organization that is conducting a systematic monitoring of the media coverage of the May 24, 2009 Presidential Election.
MPRP candidate N.Enkhbayar, current President of Mongolia, and DP candidate Ts.Elbegdorj MP are competing in the 2009 Presidential Election.

The monitoring involves the last two weeks of media campaign of the candidates through the Mongolian National Public Broadcasting Television, the UBS, the TV-5, the TV-9 and Channel 25 TV.
Recently, the Globe International has released results of 5-day monitoring between May 8 and 12. It has made an observation to a 24,005 minute program, excluding news program. Of them four percent or 948 minutes cover news and information about the two candidates, 62 percent of total 948 minutes was devoted to information about Ts.Elbegdorj, and 38 percent went to N.Enkhbayar.
Positive news about the Enkhbayar was 55.2 percent, neutral — 46.9 percent, and negative information was 14.4 percent. Meanwhile, positive news about Elbegdorj was 44.8 percent, neutral — 53.1 percent and negative — 85.6 percent.
According to the monitoring, the TV news programs broadcast the 653 minute information about the candidates. 38 percent of them was about Ts.Elbegdorj, and 62 percent was for N.Enkhbayar. “It is observed that positive information about Enkhbayar was 70.7 percent, while negative information about Elbegdorj was 80.5 percent,” the report said.
Globe International sought to evaluate mass media performance in providing objective and balanced coverage of the candidates in the news and current affairs programs. Globe International had wide experience in performing the media monitoring during 2004 and 2008 parliamentary elections and 2005 presidential election.
The monitoring is supported by the Open Society Forum within a framework of “Civil Society Monitoring Network”.
