Two Mongolians living in the United States helped catch a robber, despite being shot in the process, at the Gourmet Market in Oakland, California, last Thursday night.
According to CBS, an American news station: “A clerk and two customers at a downtown market were shot during a robbery Thursday night but still were able to detain one of the suspects, at one point beating him with a dumbbell, police said.
The captured suspect, 21-year-old James Morgan of Oakland, admitted to police Sgt. Mark Thomas and Officer Robert Trevino his part in the robbery-shooting, authorities said
The three shooting victims — the 30-year-old clerk and two brothers, ages 43 and 29, who had come to the store to buy cigarettes — were all in stable condition Friday at a hospital”.
The violent incident began about 9:30 p.m. at the Gourmet Market, 1549 Jackson St., a store in an apartment complex.
The clerk and two customers were inside when two robbers, both holding guns, entered and demanded cash and wallets from the three victims, police said.
The 29-year-old brother hit Morgan in the face and was shot in the arm, police said. He and his brother continued to fight with Morgan, who then shot the brother in the chest and face while the other suspect shot the clerk in the neck, police said. The suspect who shot the clerk fled with an undetermined amount of cash.
Despite bleeding from their wounds, the two brothers continued to fight with Morgan and were able to get his gun away from him, police said. The struggle continued, and the clerk hit Morgan with a dumbbell before he was finally subdued and handcuffed, and the police arrived, authorities said.
Morgan was arrested on multiple counts of robbery and assault with a firearm. He was questioned by investigators Friday morning after being treated at a hospital for injuries he suffered in the fight with the victims, police said.
The names of the victims were not immediately released by police.
However, the Mongolian Journal Zamdaan discovered the two customers were Mongolians, L.Bat-Olzii and G.Zorigoo, who currently live in the United States. Zamdaan’s reporter met with Bat-Olzii on Friday.
Zorigoo was seriously injured during the altercation and is still receiving treatment. Bat-Olzii’s hand is injured, but he was released from the hospital. He said that Zorigoo’s condition is not improving.
Bat-Olzii described the episode: “Yesterday Zorigoo and I went to a shop owned by a Korean man in order to buy cigarettes. Suddenly a black guy came in and pointed a gun at the clerk and another one guy pointed a gun at Zorigoo.
The store clerk threw something at the guy who was pointing a gun at him, and Zorigoo hit the other guy’s hand. Everything happened really quickly.”
At this point, shots were fired by the assailants, who Bat-Olzii described as large and strong.
Bat-Olzii saw blood spouting from his hand and noticed that Zorigoo was also drenched in blood. Soon afterwards police entered the market. Reports suggest that one of Zorigoo’s lungs was injured.
The Mongolian Council and the Mongolian Women’s Association are working to help Zorigoo, in part by bringing his family to visit him from Mongolia. Zorigoo will need expensive surgery, according to the Zamdaan Journal.
Oakland’s Police Department is offering up to US$15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect who fled, according CBS.
