THE number of people arrested in connection with the import of methanol from China and its use in illegally distilling and selling vodka crossed 10 last week, according to police. The vodka containing the toxic chemical killed 14 people and hundreds had to be hospitalized to be treated for poisoning.
Sh.Monkhbat, Director of Asian Wolf, the company that made the vodka,
and his wife Ts.Selenge, are now in a pre-trial detention center. Their
arrest was delayed as Monkhbat himself was in hospital recovering from
poisoning, and Selenge was taking care of him there. Monkhbat told a
newspaper that on New Year’s Eve he and two others had drunk the vodka
he had produced. Both these two died shortly after.
Monkhbat told police that he had transferred all his legal power and
responsibility to his wife as he hoped to soon become a public officer
at the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Police have also arrested two customs officers on the Zamin-Uud border
checkpoint and J.Lkhamchinjav, an accountant at the Ulaanbaatar
Equipment company, in connection with the illegal import of the
chemical.
Media reports say that close relatives of Selenge were involved in
arranging deals to allow vodka production companies to buy chemicals.
Continuing their search for all the vodka distilled illegally with the
toxic methanol, the Criminal Police Department this week found 40,000
bottles bearing suspect labels like Nunjig, Tsatsal, and Naiman Sharga
in a storeroom of a distilling company, Setgelshgui Tergel. The owner
of the company in Songinokhairkhan District in Ulaanbaatar admitted to
hiding the bottles under the floor.
The Government has already warned the general public against drinking toxic vodka and to surrender any suspect stocks with them.
