Russia takes medal count lead on the last day at Sochi

Arguably, the most sensational and extravagant Winter Olympics – costing more than 50 billion USD (more than all previous Winter Olympics combined), closed in Sochi on Sunday.
On the last day of the games, host country Russia climbed to the top of the medals table with a total of 32 two medals (12 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze as of press time).
Norway, Canada and the USA followed Russia on the medals table.
Russia’s lead in this year’s Winter Olympics was the best the country, even as the Soviet Union, has ever had at the games.
It was the Russian skiers who secured the victory for Russia in the Olympic medal count, by occupying all places on the podium in the 50km mass start race on the final day of the games.
The triple medal win secured Russia’s leading position in the total medal count of the Sochi Olympics, since no other national team would be able to beat Russia’s results in the two remaining events on the last day.
Only 26 countries managed to win medals at the Sochi Games.
Two Mongolian cross country skiers competed in this year’s games and fell short. Mongolian skier Ch.Otgontsetseg competed in the ladies’ 10 km classic in cross-country skiing and placed 70th with a 38:43.1 minute finish time on February 13. B.Byambadorj placed 80th, with a completion time of 48:29.6 minutes in the men’s 15 km classic of cross-country skiing the following day.
Mongolia has sent athletes to every edition of the Olympic Winter Games since 1964, except for the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, Austria.
