City authority provides housing to seniors

The Ulaanbaatar City Representative Council (UCRC) approved a housing project for people in needy groups on May 9, 2013, to support the elderly, disabled, and young couples who do not meet mortgage loan criteria.

Out of 8,200 Ulaanbaatar residents who have requested accommodations from 1995 to 2012, a working group comprised of city officials inspected 5,000 requests and approved 128 seniors who qualified for the program. Ulaanbaatar’s administrative organizations handed over apartment certificates to the seniors on Friday.

The 128 seniors were selected for the first stage of the project as they do not own any private apartments, houses, or real estate, and live in rented gers and homes in the ger districts or apartment basements. Many of them previously suffered from severe financial losses such as an accidental fire that destroyed their homes.

The apartment for the elderly was constructed at 100 Ail under the auspices of the Ulaanbaatar City Investment Authority, by Beren Group.

Akhmadyn Khotkhon-1 (Apartments for the Elderly-1) project officials started forming contracts with seniors on Monday. The rent for the apartments will be 3,000 MNT per meter square. The apartments vary in size from 25.8 to 37.3 square meters, and the renters will be charged approximately 110,000 to 170,000 MNT per month, including electricity, water, sanitation and heating bills.

During the certificate granting ceremony, the Chief of the UCRC, D.Battulga, said, “We are conducting this project to provide rental apartments to our elders that have no accommodations. In 2014, 10 billion MNT will be allocated from the state budget for the project. More elders in need of accommodations will be provided with rental apartments next year.”

During the ceremony, the elderly who received certificates for the moderately priced rental apartments expressed their gratitude. “I have submitted many applications requesting accommodation from the state for over 40 years. My request was finally approved and I can hardly believe that I am about to move into such a nice apartment. I want to express my sincere gratitude to our city administration,” a recipient of the housing certificate, J.Galya, said.
