Smugglers using unsuspecting Mongolians being investigated

Lately, the number of criminal cases involving a gang of Mongolian smugglers who deceive other Mongolians at the airport in Hong Kong has risen. The smugglers approach Mongolians who are about to depart from Hong Kong and leave their baggage with them, saying, “Could you look after my baggage for a moment? I want to go and eat quickly.”

When the smugglers don’t return, the innocent Mongolians take the baggage with them when boarding is called for their flight, worried about leaving the baggage alone. In the meantime, the smugglers have already taken their seats on the airplane, with the illegal goods in the possession of unsuspecting, benevolent passengers.

They wait for their new accomplices to safely bring their baggage through security checkpoints. The smuggled goods have included illegal drugs, prescription medicine and expensive jewelry. If the illegal goods are discovered, the smugglers are clear of involvement, while the helpful Mongolian passenger is apprehended.

This kind of smuggling, which victimizes Mongolians abroad, has been increasing. Mongolian law enforcement has received reports about the gang and are currently working to track down the smugglers.
