Ministry reports reduction in air pollution

The Minister of Nature, Environment and Green Development S.Oyun met journalists on Monday to provide an update on the ministry’s operations and other issues related to the adoption of the new laws pertaining to the environment and green development.
She also gave updated information on processed fuel supply, enforcement of Law on Prohibition of Mineral Extraction at Water Reservoir, River Basin and Forested Areas, requirements for improving administrations of river basin protection, and introduced results of recent air pollution data.
The Clean Air Initiative, a special government fund to combat air pollution, was given 92.5 billion MNT from the state budget from 2011 to 2013. As of October 1, the initiative spent 67 billion MNT from its allocated fund.
The minister said that briquette producers are not able to meet Ulaanbaatar’s demands in the ger districts.
There are 12,461 households in the ger district of Bayangol District that use briquettes instead of raw coal. The Ulaanbaatar City Air Quality Department and Bayangol District Administrators were responsible for supplying briquettes to the area in recent years, from the Clean Air Initiative funds.
Currently, briquette producers supply wood chip briquette for 150,000 MNT a ton and semi-coked briquette for 170,000 MNTthrough the initiative. As a result of the initiative, the average carbon dioxide emission from coal burning dropped by 20.1 percent, while dust particle levels decreased by 29.5 percent this year compared to 2012, according the Minister.
