Bayankhoshuu and Selbe sub-centers to be available in 10 years

By M.ZOLJARGAL

According to Ulaanbaatar City General Development plans through 2020, the city will develop eight city sub-centers, as all offices and other major services are centralized in only one area in Ulaanbaatar. Ulaanbaatar City Governor E.Bat-Uul’s action plan for 2012 through 2016 also pledges to develop Ulaanbaatar into a city with several city centers.

The first sub-centers will be developed in Bayankhoshuu and Selbe, and Mongolia signed a memorandum to fund them with the assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2012. Mayor E.Bat-Uul visited the sites last Saturday to check on their progress and hear residents’ thoughts.

Around Bayankhoshuu, in the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 28th khoroos of Songinokhairkhan district, 162 hectares of land will be redeveloped as a suburb housing 200,000 residents, as stated in the “Ger district redevelopment and investment support project” of Asian Development Bank.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, is the United Nations agency for human settlements and is also assisting in the redevelopment project.

The sub-centers designs were also formulated considering the proposals of residents from the area. Bayankhoshuu residents divided themselves into 108 groups of 15 to 30 people and discussed how they could take part in the upcoming sub-center redevelopment, how to transfer their lands, and plans for engineering infrastructure and the locations of social services.

Bayankhoshuu residents expressed their full support of the project, and 35 percent of them have  already reported they want to take part in the redevelopment works.

As for the Selbe sub-center, it will cover 156 hectares of land in the 14th khoroo of Sukhbaatar District, and the 14th and 18th khoroos of Chinggeltei District.

As estimated by the ADB, it will take 10 years to complete the two sub-centers. ADB is providing 500 million USD for the project.
