Exploring ‘Street Art 2013’

By B.Tungalag

Not everyone goes to fine art galleries but everyone walks along city streets . You can see paintings on walls everywhere, such as the extensive murals on Sun Road (Narnii Zam) and Sansar Tunnel.

Many people object to street artists painting on walls. Street artists share their views and critiques of society through expressive paintings and stencils in public and private spaces. Many street artists decorate the Ulaanbaatar streets at night to avoid detection. Some years ago, a tradition began where street artists gathered for a day of collaboration at ONDO Animation Studio. This year, the fifth “Street Art” event was held at the National Amusement Park on August 21 and 22. During the “Street Art” event, around 50 pieces by street artists were on display and a graffiti painting competition was organized.

The first “Street Art” event was held in front of the Beatles statue, but it has grown year by year. Street art promoters “Flamingo Fitch”, “Futurama”, “Low to Loud” and “Umma Gumma” were joined by live bands performing at the event. Amateur extreme sport enthusiasts offered attendees a cycling performance. Manager of ONDO Animation Studio, B.Tsatsral said, “There is no one allowed to paint on my organization’s walls. So artists paint on the walls of abandoned factories or broken walls. The artworks displayed in the exhibition were painted on board and paper because it wasn’t possible to paint on walls.”

Spray paint designed for street art is expensive, so many artists use spray paint for construction and industrial purpose, which can be highly toxic.  Organizers presented paint and respirators to competition winners.

Street art was developed in 1970s New York City in the USA. It emerged in Mongolia in 1997.
