SBL defeats Tanan in Game 1 of the MNBA finals

SBL’s coach, D.Davaanyam, described his team’s strategy going into Wednesday’s game with one word: “Defense.”

They executed. SBL’s 2-3 zone held Tanan to only 30 points at halftime on its way to a 94-81 win in Game 1 of the MNBA finals.

The Sports Palace was filled with fans for the game, as Tanan looked strong early, forcing early turnovers from SBL, who were prone to nervous traveling violations and butterfingers in the first quarter. In the second quarter of play, Tanan led by as much as seven points.

However, SBL’s offense began to find its rhythm, as they pulled ahead by 12 points at the half and never looked back, leading for most of the rest of the game by double-digit figures.

B.Bilguun of SBL had a particularly impressive game on both ends of the floor, providing a strong inside presence on defense and scoring a total of 28 points. SBL’s points, however, were pretty well-spread: three players had scoring in double-digits. B.Bilguun attributed the success of the team to its overall effort.

“We’ve played Tanan a lot, so we know them well and were able to focus on defense,” he said, after the victory. “We practiced a lot for the game, and we didn’t handle the ball too much, but rather passed around a lot, so we executed our strategy for today. If the team works together well (like this), we can become champions.”

Tanan’s Freddie Woods, a star player out of Wisconsin, USA, had a strong defensive effort inside the paint. He led the game in blocks and disrupted much of SBL’s outside-inside passing game. However, the team was not able to execute its game plan against SBL’s defense.

“We tried some new stuff, but we didn’t have a lot of time to practice it,” said Woods.

Game 2 of the MNBA finals will be held tonight at 7 p.m in the Ulaanbaatar Sports Palace.
