Mongolians fall victim to online fraud

Law enforcement authorities have reported that a rising number of Mongolian consumers and banks are becoming victims of online fraud.

Numerous Mongolians have lost money after attempting to purchase items from individuals who upload pictures of cars and other items for sale at low prices on websites with open classified sections, such as unegui.mn. In at least one case, an individual attempted to buy something by transferring payment to a fake “Western Union” website. Recently, two Mongolian citizens lost 7,500 USD in a fraudulent wire transfer to Denmark.

In March, a Mongolian citizen transferred money to a fraudulent seller who was advertising cars for far below the average market price. The swindler demanded that the buyer prove he had enough money to pay for the car and make a deposit in what was supposedly a foreign bank, then email a scanned copy of the transaction. The buyer did so, thinking it would secure his purchase. The swindler then provided the buyer with an address for a website that instructed him to enter his password and other private information to verify the transfer of funds. Through this website the fraudulent seller obtained the information required to withdraw money from the buyer’s bank account, a method known as “phishing.”

Phishing acquires information such as passwords, usernames, and credit card details by deceiving people through electronic means of communication.
