Dornod’s herders seek help

Published Monday 11 March, 2013

According to the Head of the Industry and Agriculture Department of Dornod Province, A.Enkhtuvshin, herders in Dornod Province are in need of assistance following the harsh winter. Dornod Province is still covered in snow, in depths ranging between 20 and 60 centimetres.  Khalkhgol soum has had snowfalls more than 30 times since last November, with Yalalt Baga, home to 195 herders, being hit the hardest. The provincial authorities have distributed 2,000 bales of hay, 40 tons of fodder, and two tons of flour to help herders in the province to cope with the harsh conditions this winter.

Khalkhgol soum had more than 63,000 livestock before the winter. Soum authorities have reported that around 4,600 livestock were lost due to the severe winter conditions this year. More than half of the livestock in Yalaltbaga died as a result of the harsh winter.

Herders have said that they did everything they could to prepare for the winter, but around 90 percent of the main pasture lands of the region were destroyed by wildfires in the previous summer.

“Soon the animals will start breeding, the animals will become exhausted, and the chance of them dying is high. We have appealed to the government and the National Emergency Commission a number of times. We are doing everything we can on our own,” said A.Enkhtuvshin.
