Driving license delay continues

Published Friday April 26, 2013

In January the Traffic Police Department (TPD) informed the public that it had resolved the problems related to lengthy delays in the issuing of driving licenses, and declared that the backlog would soon be cleared. Many drivers have still not received their driving licenses, however. The TPD now expects most licenses to be printed by May.

The TPD explained three months ago that it had terminated its contract with the company responsible for printing driving licenses, MDI. The TPD said that the company has neglected its duty to print the licenses within the expected time and had caused inconvenience for thousands of motorists, who had been waiting for licenses since printing was halted on June 10, 2012.

The TPD also reported that it had held an official selection process last year to select a company to replace MDI, and had selected Smart Solutions. The TPD concluded a contract with the company at the end of 2012 and the TPD reported in January that the printing of licenses had resumed on December 25.

At the time, the TPD was reported as saying “The previous printing house had only one license printer, but Smart Solutions will print licenses with three printers and it will complete the printing of all licenses before March 1, 2013.”

Journalists spoke with an investigator in the Prevention Division of the TPD, Police Lieutenant N.Purevdorj, to find out more about when the license printing backlog is expected to be cleared.

-Most of those who completed their driving courses since June 2012 still haven’t received their licenses. Is Smart Solutions printing the licenses of drivers who recently completed their courses?

-Drivers who graduated from driving courses between June and October of 2012 are currently receiving their licenses. We are not yet printing the licenses for those who graduated after October.

-Does this mean that those who lost their licenses or are seeking to change the class of their driving license are not able to get licenses printed?

-We are receiving the data from those drivers, and their licenses will be printed from May 1.

-How about the new drivers who have just graduated their driving courses?

-I think their licenses will be printed within May.
