Information center for the deaf launched

On Tuesday the Mongolian National Association of the Deaf held an inauguration ceremony to launch the Information Center for the Deaf (ICD). According to the Public Communication Division of the ICD, the center will enable deaf people and those with hearing impairments to access information in text and sign language, and to access counseling services. The center will also train sign language interpreters.

The deaf in Mongolia currently have few opportunities to obtain news and information as television news reports, programs, and films are rarely interpreted for the deaf. The only program that provides a sign language interpretation for the deaf is the “Tsagiin Khurd” news report provided by the Mongolian National Broadcasting Corporation.

According to the findings of a recent study, Mongolia has over 13,000 deaf and hearing-impaired citizens, including many children. But the country lacks sufficient sign language teachers and interpreters to teach children who are born with a hearing impairment or lose their hearing.

The ICD has a warm and pleasant atmosphere and features a small library for visitors, as well as equipment to allow them to view videos.

The center was established as a part of a project to support the deaf, jointly implemented by the Finnish Lutheran Overseas Mission (FLOM), the Mongolian National Association of the Deaf, and the Association of Sign Language Interpreters.

FLOM has been operating in Mongolia since 2001 and has implemented a range of activities in support of hearing-impaired people in Tuv, Khentii, Dundgovi, Zavkhan and Arkhangai Provinces, including supporting local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to assist deaf citizens. Over 50 such NGOs are in operation, according to the Mongolian State Registration Authority.

The ICD is located on the third floor of Amber House office in 100 Ail.
