Cold weather won’t stop the winter festival fun

This coming March will be the month of the winter festivals such as the famous Eagle Festival, Camel Festival, and the Khuvsgul Lake Ice Festival. These winter festivals are organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism with the aim of developing and promoting winter tourism in Mongolia.  The festivals are special in that they allow foreigners to be familiarized with Mongolian traditions and customs as well as the nomadic people’s lifestyles.

Khuvsgul Lake Ice Festival

The annual Blue Pearl Country Festival, known as the Khuvsgul Lake Ice Festival by locals, takes place on the frozen Lake Khuvsgul, the most picturesque and one of the largest lakes of Mongolia located in the northwest of the country in Khuvsgul Province. This year the festival is scheduled to be held for two days on March 2 and 3.

The festival opens with a special ceremony, which is dedicated to giving an offering to Khuvsgul Lake and Khoridol Saridag Mountain (the mountain range surrounding the lake) and includes different activities, games, and performances such as ankle bone shooting on ice, skating marathon, “Father, Mother, and Me” relay competition, tradition costumes show, and even a bonfire ceremony in the evening. There will also be reindeer and horse sleighing races, tug-of-war games on snow, and ice sumo competitions and the participants can also compete in a wrestling bout on snow. In addition, “Duun Aylguu” (Melody), a singing contest is also scheduled to take place during the festival.

Camel Polo Festival

The fascinating Camel Polo Festival will take place on March 9 and 10 at the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex in Tsonjin Boldog. The festival is being held in cooperation with the Ministry of Manufacturing and Agriculture and Mongolian Camel Polo Sports Federation.

The festival will feature camel polo games and a contest to select the best looking camel. A fair and exhibition of camel wool and dairy products will open at the venue and different cultural performances as well as a traditional costumes show will be presented.

The Camel Polo festival has a total prize fund of 20 million MNT and each participant will be granted transportation expenses for their camels.

Eagle Festival

Tsagaan Shonkhor LLC is going to organize the Eagle Festival on March 5 at the Chinggisiin Khuree Tourist Camp in Jargalant, Ulaanbaatar. This festival is one of the most favourite events of people who like hunting as it shows Mongolia’s eagle hunting ceremony. People are provided with a chance to have their pictures taken with the eagles.
