Democratic Party majority but re-vote set for six districts

The Democratic Party (DP) received the majority of votes in the Local Administrative Election held on 21 November, according to the General Election Commission of Mongolia. Voting attendance did not reach the required level of 50% in six of the nine electoral districts of Ulaanbaatar, however. It was therefore announced that there must be a re-election on 30 November in those six districts: Bayanzurkh, Bayangol, Songinokhairkhan, Sukhbaatar, Khan-Uul and Chingeltei.
The Chairman of the General Election Commission of Mongolia, Ch. Sodnomtseren, announced the summary results and said that according to the data received from the sub-electoral districts, the DP won 379 seats, the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) 334 seats, the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) 15 seats, the Justice Coalition (coalition of the MPRP and the Mongolian National Democratic Party) 5 seats, the Civil Will and Green Party (CWGP) one seat , and the Civil Justice Coalition (the coalition of the Civil Will Green party and the MPRP) two seats. Five independent candidates won in the Citizens Representative Khural in the aimags, cities, districts and suoms.
In order to ensure more voters participate in the re-election, the City Council resolved that all eligible voters are authorized to take leave from their job between 08:00am and 02:00pm on 30 November. But employees must first register at their office, and when they return to work they must show their voting receipts.
In accordance with the Election Law of Mongolia there will be no further re-votes for this election after today, even if the attendance at this re-election still doesn’t reach the required 50% level, said officials.
In the three districts where the voter turn-out was over 50%: Baganuur, Bagakhangai and Nalaikh, the MPP won 36 mandates, the DP 29, and the MPRP 2. In total (comprising the aimags, suoms and the three districts of Ulaanbaatar), the DP received 408 mandates, the MPP 370 and the MPRP 17.
