Khentii Province family stitches a Mongolian epic on 100 meters of felt

A family in Khentii Province has started quilting and stitching to story of “The Secret History of the Mongols” on a 100-meter long piece of felt to set a Guinness World Record and promote traditional Mongolian quilting and stitching methods.

They started sewing “The Secret History of the Mongols” on felt two months ago and currently completed 20 meters of work.

The family consists of tailors and artists and runs the the ger and furniture manufacturer  Khan Khentiin Gar Urchuud. “The Secret History of the Mongols” is expected to be finished by June.

Below is a brief interview with G.Narantuya, a tailor at Khan Khentiin Gar Urchuud.

Please tell us about yourself to our readers.

My family has been running Khan Khentiin Gar Urchuud for 10 years. I am a tailor, my husband is an artist.  Our company has seven workers and manufactures Mongolian gers and furniture.

How and when did you decide to quilt “The Secret History of the Mongols” on felt?

I’d heard that the 1,000 camels parade, 3,000 wrestlers gathering, and Naadam horse races were registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. That inspired me, and I decided Mongolian traditional handicrafts could be registered in the Guinness World Records. I thought that every process of my work should include a Mongolian cultural heritage, so I chose felt. Only Mongolia manufactures felt. I studied stuff that had been registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. There was no similar feat in the Guinness World Records. Also, no one had created a handicraft like mine in Mongolia.

The process of creating is very interesting. Do you mean you are depicting every single concept, sentence, and picture in “The Secret History of the Mongols” on a 100-meter long piece of  felt?

Yes. I will quilt and stitch everything. My husband is reading “The Secret History of the Mongols” and painting the concept on felt. After that, the tailors are quilting. There will be no words on our work, we feature everything as an image. We are aiming to finish it before the ASEM Summit.

How much money are you spending on your work?

I think all expenses, including workers’ salaries, workplace rent, and raw materials, will be 52 million MNT.
