Mongolia fulfills requirements to comply with its Japanese EPA

By M.OYUNGEREL

Mongolia gave Japan notification on March 11 that it has made amendments to comply with the economic partnership agreement signed on February 10, 2015 by Prime Minister of Mongolia Ch.Saikhanbileg and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe .
On February 5, Parliament approved amendments to the Resolution on Approving Customs Tax Tariffs for Import Goods and the Law on Excise Tax required to enact the economic partnership agreement. Minister of Mongolia and Head of the Cabinet Secretariat S.Bayartsogt presented the verbal note to the Advisor to the Japanese Ambassador to Mongolia, Minoru Kikuchi.
“Mongolia is announcing that we have officially fulfilled procedures according to the negotiation. When Japan notifies us that it has fulfilled theirs, the countries will exchange notification and the economic partnership agreement will be enacted,” said S.Bayartsogt.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) reports that its member countries have signed a total of 585 regional and free trade agreements. Of the WTO’s 160 member countries, Mongolia is the only one that hasn’t participated in regional and free trade agreements. By signing the Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan, Mongolia will become a part of regional economic integration.
Japan has signed economic partnership agreements with 14 countries. Mongolia is one of seven countries with agreements under discussion.
