Looking out for good news with ‘Good Sign’

By M.OYUNGEREL

L.Khongorzul’s second solo endeavor, “Good Sign”,  depicts a brighter, more feminine, and more optimistic look at today’s society. The show is on view at 976 Art Gallery until March 21.
“We’re all waiting and looking out for good signs and good messages. No one wants negative things. My works here are a positive outlook on today’s society, and I envision all news to be positive and good with these paintings,” the artist said, explaining the exhibition’s name. She added that Mongol zurag is the perfect technique to convey this message, as the style never portrays realism but always fantasy and fiction.
“Good Sign” opens with the painting “Talisman”. According to the artist, the red hands in the painting are forming a shield. “Today’s society is full of negative things. A person has to use their own positive energy to protect oneself from negative things. It’s almost like saying, ‘I’m not taking anything’,” said L.Khongorzul.
L.Khongorzul’s first solo exhibition, “Precious”, included works depicting the inner worlds of women. This exhibition is characterized by work with softer colors and more blended nuances. The artist paints flowers on female bodies in many of her works. “A human is raised from nature, so we’re deeply linked to nature. We’re born from the soil, just like the flowers painted here,” said Khongorzul.
L.Khongorzul graduated from the School of Fine Arts at Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture in Mongol studying the traditional Mongolian zurag painting technique.
The artist received the Special Prize from Grand Art 6, a competition organized for young Mongolian and South Korean artists. She has participated in over 30 group exhibitions in Ulaanbaatar. She participated in the 2014 Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial in Japan and the Daejon International Artists Exchange Association’s International Artists Exhibition in the Republic of Korea.
