Students at McKinley Middle School study Mongolian culture

Sixth grade students of McKinley STEM Middle School in Washington DC learned about Mongolian arts, culture, and traditional script through the Embassy Adoption Program.
The Embassy of Mongolia to the USA is participating in the Embassy Adoption Program of Washington Performing Arts in the academic year of 2015 to 2016. Within the Embassy Adoption Program, the Embassy of Mongolia is working with McKinley STEM Middle School to promote and share Mongolian culture and history through the school’s sixth grade social sciences curriculum.
Teacher of the Foreign Service Institute in the USA M.Saruul-Erdene visited McKinley Middle School in January and taught about the history, culture and Mongolian traditional script. During his visit, M.Saruul-Erdene taught about the tales of Queen Alungoo and wrote American students’ name in Mongolian traditional script.
Artist and sculptor N.Gankhuyag, who lives and works in the USA, taught about Buddhist arts and culture in February and explained the meaning of the Tsam masked dance. At the end of the lesson, students drew their own Tsam masks and explained the meaning of their artwork.
The program will continue until June, and the Embassy of Mongolian is planning to cooperate with Mongolian professional artists and students in the USA. They will teach Mongolian dance and climate change policy to students.
At the end of the Embassy Adoption Program, students will represent Mongolia at the Model UN Program and visit the Embassy of Mongolia to present what they have learned about the country.
Established in 1974, the Embassy Adoption Program is a partnership program of D.C. Public Schools and Washington Performing Arts. The program is an academic year global education program that gives fifth and sixth grade students the unique opportunity to expand their global awareness through direct interactions with diplomats from around the world.
