Characters in the shadows

E.Sunderiya’s first solo endeavor, “Secret of Shadows”, portrays feelings, dreams, memories, and the inner worlds of women through shadowy figures. The exhibition is on view at Blue Moon Art Gallery through February 23.
E.Sunderiya graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture in 2012. The exhibition includes work created from 2012 to 2016.
The artist creates colors and patterns inside the shadows, which represent the characters of people. “People usually see the shadow as something blue, and something dark. But I wanted to show a different perspective, that it could be something nice, something bright, and an inseparable part of you,” said the artist.
In Sunderiya’s paintings, people’s shadows overlap. Each shadow has its own color, and a new color is created where the shadows fall on top of one another. The use of color points and composition points to the way people change as they intersect with other people’s paths each day.
The artist paints the shadows of people she knows. In “Sacred Dreams” she paints a girl with giant bubbles in the background. Her dreams are so big, yet so delicate that they might pop.
In “My Mom” the artist paints layered images her mother in profile. Inside the silhouettes are multicolored shadows. The first profile, with a smiling expression in red, represents a mothers’ love.
Sunderiya’s “In the Depth of the Ocean” attracted the most attention with its ambiguity. “From the works of Picasso, people started to associate the color blue with coldness and sadness. But for me, blue is for depth, power, and warmth. The girl looks very light and not serious on the outside, but she is very philosophical and deep inside,” the artist said. The artist’s use of color creates character with the depth of the ocean.
