Female speed skater wins Mongolia’s first winter sports medal


International Sports Master B.Sumiya made Olympic history by earning Mongolia its first medal in any Winter Games, earning a gold medal at the Lillehammer 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games as part of the first mixed team skate competition bringing together young men and women from different countries.
B.Sumiya’s team won the gold medal in the mixed National Olympic Committee (NOC) team sprint category of speed skating at the Youth Olympic Games on February 17. The Youth Olympic Games will continue through February 21, in Lillehammer, Norway.
The Mongolian skater was part of Team Six, a four member team made up of B.Sumiya, a female skater from Italy, and two male skaters from South Korea and China.
B.Sumiya said, “I was afraid before the race. Now, I can’t believe I won a gold medal. I was very stressed before the race, but now I’m very proud of myself. It was wonderful racing with other countries’ athletes and talking with them.” On February 13, B.Sumiya competed in the ladies’ 1,500 meter speed skating event and came in 24th place.
International Sports Master A.Ochirsukh is also in Lillehammer and competed in the men’s sprint classic cross-country skiing event on February 16. He crossed 50 km in 3:33:35 and placed 43rd among 48 athletes. In this category, skiers from Norway and South Korea took the gold and silver medals.
The Mongolian athletes participating in the Lillehammer 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games are traning and competing under the guidance of coaches T.Dorjgotov and D.Enkhbayar.
