National Committee for Reducing Air Pollution Convenes

The regular meeting of the National Committee for Reducing Air Pollution (NCRAP) of Mongolia took place on November 8. NCRAP is formulating policy regarding the complex issue of reducing the price of household coal consumption by the Government, the Committee is now ready to reduce the price of briquette which is currently being used by the households of Bayangol District. Households in this area are restricted from using raw coal.
Out of 180,000 households residing in Ulaanbaatar Ger Districts, over 20,000 of them use low-pressure stoves. This kind of stove which is very efficient at recirculating heat, will be imported from Canada and be provided to Ger Districts. The NCRAP passed a decision to sell the low-pressure stove which has a capacity of heating a 60-80 m2 space, for 75,000 MNT. This is a discount of 86% off the retail price. Some 70,000 households have purchased renovated stoves last year, while the 55,000 complete combustion stoves should be purchased this winter. Therefore, 17,000 stoves should be sold by the end of the year to Ger District households. The price reduction would be financed and backed by the Clean Air Foundation of the Mongolian Government. This is a continuation of the Millenium Challenge Fund Project.
