“Power”, M.Munkhzul’s first solo exhibition, is on view at Blue Moon Art Gallery until December 27.
M.Munkhzul won a competition organized by Blue Moon Art Gallery last year. The sculptor’s prize was the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at the gallery.
He depicted Mongolian culture and its symbols in “Power”. The exhibition consists of sculptures of morin khuur (the horse head fiddle), warriors, and animals. The artist used exaggeration and created character for all of his works.
Although consisting of few works, the exhibition is strong. Munkhzul has mixed wood, metal and different types of stones in a modern and innovative approach to portraying his subjects. In his work “Warrior”, a man’s body is sculpted in black wood, while his deel is made of stone . The posture and character of the warrior is vivid and energetic.
The stone sculptures show the artist’s true skill, as it is one of the hardest mediums to master. I believe this exhibition was one of few, but significant, finely crafted sculptures, which must have required a lot of time and dedication.
A wide use of arrows can be seen in his sculptures. The two strings of the morin khuur, the sword of a warrior, and grass under a horse are all arrows. The sharpness of the arrows is clear, and brings a serious, intimidating feel to the work.
