Helicopter crash leaves one dead and 10 injured in Nalaikh

A Mil Mi-8 helicopter belonging to Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 337 crashed on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. in Nalaikh District during a scheduled night-time military drill, killing one person and injuring 10 others.

The helicopter crashed from an altitude of 310 meters and landed on its side five kilometers southwest of where Unit 337 is based, and 200 meters outside its scheduled flight zone.
Colonel G.Otgonbayar was piloting the helicopter, which had 10 passengers at the time of the accident. According to Head of Soldier-Citizen Relations Office of the General Staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces (GSMAF) Ts.Batsaikhan and Deputy Director of GSMAF S.Dashzeveg, the helicopter’s technician, 37-year-old N.Batbayar, died in the crash. The other nine passengers and the pilot were taken to the Central Military Hospital. Ts.Batsaikhan and N.Batbayar expressed their condolences to N.Batbayar’s family on behalf of the GSMAF and promised that they would provide assistance to the family.
Two of the people injured in the crash were in serious condition and required surgery. Four of the soldiers have broken legs, one has broken his ribs, and three received external injuries. A nurse at the Central Military Hospital reported that their general health was stable, “But we might have to amputate one man’s severely injured leg. We’re doing all we can,” she said.
Officials believe the crash resulted from limited visibility. “The new snow rose in the air from the spinning of the helicopter’s rotor, and might have limited the pilot’s vision. The death of Sh.Otgonbileg, UN spectators and Japanese journalists in 2001 was also linked to snow rising with the rotor and obstructing the pilot’s view, so it is likely that this was the case,” they said. At 7:30 p.m. yesterday, the official investigation of the cause of the crash was still underway.
The Mil Mi-8 helicopter was firts mass produced in Russia in 1961. It’s currently being used in over 50 countries around the world. Some of the inspectors believe that the crash might have been caused by the age of the helicopter, as it was manufactured in 1984.
