Japan to build Mongolia’s first-ever university hospital

Mongolia will soon have its first university hospital, part of the campus of Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS), made possible by grant aid from the Government of Japan.
On December 22, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from Japan to Mongolia Takenori Shimizu, Chief Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Mutsumi Sato, Minister of Education Culture and Sciences of Mongolia L.Gantumur, and Ulaanbaatar authorities signed an agreement to build the hospital for MNUMS, confirming grant aid from the Government of Japan.
MNUMS started developing the university hospital project and submitted the project request to JICA in 2012. The project aims to reach all people of Mongolia, providing medical assistance and health services at a high level, to improve the quality of training available to doctors and medical interns after graduation, to establish a university hospital system, to diagnose and treat more than three dozen diseases that are not currently being treated in Mongolia, and to carry out nationwide surveys and workshops concerning the health sector.
The New Government of Reforms supported the project in 2013 and issued eight hectares of land in Bayanzurkh District for the construction of the university hospital.
At the agreement signing ceremony, the Japanese side announced that Kanto Construction had been selected to execute the construction of the hospital. Construction will start in 2016 and is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2018. The 150-bed university hospital will be constructed to Japanese standards.
