Cabinet approves national food and nutrition program

Cabinet ministers approved a national food and nutrition program at Monday’s regular Cabinet meeting, addressing demands to pay more attention to the nation’s food consumption and nutrition.
Ts.Munkhtur, advisor to the Prime Minister, gave a report on the decisions made during the Cabinet meeting and gave information on the national food and nutrition program. He said, “In recent years, particularly since 1990, several documents were issued in regard to the nation’s food and nutrition issues. The Health and Sports Ministry has summarized that goal, to reduce food and nutrition shortages by six times under Millennium Development Goals adopted 1990, which have been realized in 2015.
“Even though food and nutrition shortages have been reduced by six times, Mongolia still faces a need to focus on quality and healthy eating. Even though the larger goal has been successfully reached, there are still some targets to be met. Statistics issued by the National Statistical Office show that children from the ages of zero to five need to be taken into special consideration. For instance, over 10 percent of children under the age of five show insufficient growth. Also, 1.6 percent of children under five are underweight. The statistics also showed that 20 to 30 percent of children from the ages of zero to five have vitamin A and D deficiencies. The program also includes food and nutrition needs for infants and teenagers.
“Mongolia’s production of organic products and raw materials has decreased since 1990. The amount of imported products has increased dramatically. Researchers have found out that the sale of products with excessive sugar, salt, and fat is causing harm to the health of nation. Almost 50 percent of the Mongolian population is obese. People tend to be affected by illnesses caused by obesity. Furthermore, the number of fruits and vegetables consumed per capita does not meet world standards.”
