‘Romeo and Juliet’ opens

The timeless classic “Romeo and Juliet” opened on November 12, on the 84th anniversary of the Mongolian Academic Theater of Drama and Mongolian Pride Day. The play is being staged for the third time in Mongolia, with a 20 year gap from the previous one.
The long awaited show was directed by State Honored Director N.Naranbaatar. Everything from the costumes to the choreography was well-set in an innovative way. Visitors could see that the director sought a new and different perspective for telling the story of the two young lovers. And he succeeded.
An oldie in the theater industry, Naranbaatar is best known as the director of S.Jargalsaikhan’s “Shunu Dundiin Bujig” (Midnight Dance), and Mongolian renditions of Hugo’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame”, Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Sebastian’s “Nameless Star”.
Personally, I thought the casting couldn’t have been better. Although adults were playing teenagers, the youthful charm, playfulness, and innocence of the characters were well portrayed.
Rising stars B.Shinebayar and O.Dulguun played Romeo and Juliet. S.Bold-Erdene, who played Friar Laurence, portrayed his character remarkably well, with his belly laughs and wits completely aligned with that of his character.
The stage decorations and lighting was very different from other classical performances. The costumes were heavily influenced by gothic art.
A young couple held their wedding ceremony during the opening of the play. At 5:15 pm in front of the “Oath to Love” sign, a surprise wedding was planned by the groom. The couple had been married for 10 years and had three children together.
The 1996 “Romeo and Juliet” costumes were displayed in the South Hall of the Academic Theater along with this year’s costume design concepts. A fine arts exhibition was showcased near the costumes.
Overall, although we’re on the other side of the globe, Verona has never seemed so close. The magic in “Romeo and Juliet” is that anyone can relate to the young lovers’ story and the latest rendition perfectly captured its essence.
