Dornod residents demonstrate against Khalkh Gol free trade zone

On October 28, Dornod Province residents and the National Labor Party demonstrated against government decree No.75 to establish a free trade zone in Khalkh Gol soum, at Chinggis Square.
The decree approved the use of 500,000 hectares of land in the Khalkh Gol river basin for an agricultural free zone.
The National Labor Party inspected the site after the government decree was issued. They analyzed the risks of the trade zone and whether other countries had similar zones with experts, and sent a report to the government. The party said that they still haven’t received a response.
Khalkh Gol residents have said that the government should not experiment an agricultural free trade zone, which doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world, on the land of Mongolia’s ancestors.
“There are a few times a country has succeeded with the agricultural free trade zones and no country has built one on more than 2,500 hectares of land,” they claimed.
The protestors warned that they will demonstrate until the government retracts the decree.
