By B.TUNGALAG

Mongolian athlete M.Ugaanbayar won gold medals at the 1st Asia Ssireum Championship and 5th World Ssireum Championship, which took place simultaneously at Thuwana National Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar, from September 18 to 23.

Ssireum, or Korean wrestling, is a folk wrestling style and traditional national sport of Korea. In its modern form, each contestant wears a belt (satba) that wraps around the waist and the thigh. The competition employs a series of techniques, which inflict little harm or injury to the opponent. Opponents lock on to each others’ belt, and one achieves victory by bringing any part of the opponent’s body above the knee to the ground.
Athlete of Khilchin Sports Committee M.Uuganbayar, coached by President of the Mongolian Ssireum Federation M.Usukhbayar, competed in the men’s 90 kg category and won both the world and Asian champion titles for ssireum. The championships were M.Uuganbayar’s first time participating in an international tournament.
A total of 113 athletes from 18 countries participated in the championships. Four weight classes for male athletes and three weight classes for female athletes were included in the Asian Championship, and five weight classes for male athletes and four weight classes for female athletes made up the World Championship.
