Gergely Kantor: My dream is to reach 2,700 points in my performance rating

Mongol News interviewed Hungarian chess master, the leading competitor of the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad, Gergely Kantor.

How do you feel about this competition so far?

I am happy that I’m in Mongolia and in this competition. I am satisfied with the competition’s organization. I’m a vegetarian so it’s a bit hard to get used to the meals here.

Your team has been doing very well. Which was the hardest out of the seven games that you’ve played so far?

In the last game, we played with the leading teams. Games with the Indian and Singaporean teams were the hardest.  We’re playing with the Russian team today. We have a chance to win this competition. We have to be careful in the upcoming days and strive individually.

There have been seven games so far. How are you doing so far?

I won five and lost twice. I lost those two because of my irresponsibility. It affected the team’s total score a lot.

Have you played against Mongolian chess players? How are they?

I played with three Mongolians and won. Mongolian kids are not very good at starting the games, but I can see they do the ending and middle part very well.

Have you made friends with any Mongolians yet?

I haven’t yet, but they seem friendly and fun.

What have you accomplished so far at international competitions?

Meeting the requirements to become an International Chess Master is my biggest accomplishment. Last year, when I got this title at 15, I was the youngest International Master in my country.

What’s your goal for the future?

Firstly, I want to win this competition. Then I want to become a grandmaster and increase my performance rating to 2,700 points. Currently I have 2,500 points. This is my dream.

Is this your first time in Mongolia?

Yes. I was expecting it to be a whole lot different than European countries and I was right.

Is there any place you planned to see before leaving?

I have been concentrating on the Olympiad so I haven’t planned anything yet.
