Elderly woman injured in ceiling collapse

The ceiling of an apartment on the first floor of Building No.34, an outdated building near Chinggis Khaan International Airport, collapsed last week. An 86-year-old woman was injured in the collapse.
The building was assessed as not fit for people to live in due to outdated conditions three years ago by specialized agencies. However, it was still being lived in when the collapse occurred. Other residents of the building have not left, despite the high risk of more structural failures.
Residents of the building have said that the walls and ceilings of the building have cracked and had fungal problems in the past two years. Although Building No.34 was listed as one of the city’s buildings planned for demolition and reconstruction, selection of the construction company to carry out the project has been halted due to conflicts, according to building residents.
When asked about why the reconstruction has been delayed, Chairman of the Ulaanbaatar General Planning Authority O.Odbayar, said, “Building No.34 must be listed for demolition if the specialized inspection agencies assessed it as unfit. The possible problems might be connected to tender, or refusal of the residents to cooperate with the project. I have no detailed information about it.”
The number of outdated buildings in Ulaanbaatar is high, particularly in the suburbs. To address the issue, the city administrations issued an ordinance to demolish unsafe buildings and build new apartment buildings on the grounds. Yet, the implementation of the ordinance remains low, reported News.mn.
