Farmer’s market sells produce at bargain prices

Although Mongolia has lost crops from more than 50,000 hectares to wildfire and droughts, a fresh vegetable farmer’s market has opened at Construction Square. The open air market will continue until October 1.
The market with the motto “We choose what we planted and produced it in Mongolia” is being organized by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Office of the Chingeltei District Governor, in partnership with the organization Global Communist.
The market has been organized since 2013 to support the businesses of farmers and small cooperatives. A total of 21 cooperatives from 21 provinces are taking part in the farmer’s market, said a marketing specialist from Global Communist.
Widely consumed vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, and onions are being sold for 1,000 to 1,500 MNT per kilogram, and tomatoes cost 4,000 MNT to 5,000 MNT per kilogram. Watermelon was available for 1,000 MNT to 1,500 MNT per kilogram, broccoli for 3,500 to 4,000 MNT per kilogram, and pickled vegetables cost 2,500 MNT to 5,000 MNT depending on the size of the jars being sold.
There were also harder to find domestically grown produce such as pumpkin, red garlic, red turnip, red cabbage, organic honey, yellow watermelon, cucumbers, peppers, persimmon and pollen. The vegetables at the farmer’s market are being sold at relatively low prices as they are being sold directly from the hands of farmers.
