Court releases jailed journalist after imposing a fine

Info.mn journalist S.Battulga, who was jailed for publishing an article related to the controversial ownership of Noyod Group LLC, was released on Tuesday afternoon after having a fine imposed.
The court had jailed the journalist on charges of conspiring with others for libel against S.Bilegt, one of the two people who claim to be the only owners of Noyod.
The trial took place in the Criminal Primary Court of Bayanzurkh, Sukhbaatar, and Chinggeltei districts. The judges did not change the decision to convict the journalist of libel, but released him after sentencing him with the payment of a 19.2 million MNT fine, 100 times the minimum monthly wage. However, 4.2 million MNT was deducted from the fine, factoring in the prison time served by S.Battulga.
Earlier in the trial of libel against S.Bilegt, the court found G.Buyandorj, D.Batjargal, G.Damdindorj guilty of preparing false evidence and conspiring with a journalist to publish false information. The three were sentenced to prison terms of six months to three years and three months in prison.
Prior to the closing of the trial, the Mongolian Journalists’ Union, Mongolian Broadcasting Union, Mongolian Website Association, Globe International NGO, and other media outlets held a peaceful demonstration against the court’s verdict convicting the journalist for publishing a statement that Noyon Group LLC had already posted on its website.
