Blizzard blocks province roads during Tsagaan Sar

A heavy blizzard on Friday morning blocked roads with snow in Darkhan-Uul, Orkhon, and Selenge provinces, also bringing whiteout and conditions and causing massive traffic congestion on the road from Orkhon Province to Ulaanbaatar.
Drivers and passengers were stuck on the road for more than four hours as the blizzard blew heavy snow on the roads. Though plows and police arrived in the afternoon to manage the clogged lanes and remove snow, heavy congestion delayed their work.
Visibility was very limited in the blizzard and police at the Erdenet checkpoint warned residents travelling to Ulaanbaatar and the provinces that the road was blocked. However, drivers kept joining the long queue of vehicles parked on the road.
More than 300 cars were stuck between Orkhon Bridge and Darkhan 40 Post that day, according to local sources. The road was eventually blocked by police vehicles at the Darkhan junction in the early evening.
Wind speed reached 18 to 24 meters per second and police advised drivers in provinces and in the city to stay home. Many drivers ended up with vehicles stuck in the heavy snow along the side of the road while trying to pursue alternate routes to the paved road.
The National Auto Transportation Center also warned drivers to avoid travel to Govisumber Province on Sunday due to blizzard conditions. The road to the province was temporarily closed to prevent accidents.
The center also advised the public to drive very carefully in Baganuur and Bagakhangai Districts as the roads were covered with ice following the blizzard.
A heavy duty truck was found flipped on its side on the road to Tuv Province from Ulaanbaatar on Friday as well. Eye witnesses reported that the truck had a very heavy load.
