Mongolia to increase its beef exports to Russia tenfold

Russian officials expect Mongolia to increase its annual beef export to Russia to up to 110,000 tons, a tenfold increase from its current export volume, according to globalmeatnews.com
Currently, Mongolia annually exports 10,000 to 11,000 tons of beef to Russia. However, Russian industry participants expect that Mongolia could increase its current beef export volume to 100,000 to 110,000 tons. If successful, Mongolia would become one of the largest beef suppliers in the Russian market.
Formerly, Mongolia exported large quantities of beef to Russia. However, a ban on Mongolian imports was imposed in 2010, following several outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease, and Mongolia was not able to restore its former supply quantities.
“Mongolians are ready to supply our market with products to the maximum possible level,” said Alexei Alexeenko, assistant manager of Russia’s veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance).
Rosselkhoznadzor said the first shipments of beef from Mongolia were ready, with the first batch of cattle already being slaughtered. Russian market participants say Mongolian beef may partly replace supplies from Brazil and other South American countries, as it will offer more attractive prices, due to lower outlay on logistics. “100,000 tons is about 15 to 20 percent of Russia’s total beef imports. Working with Mongolia is much more profitable, for the country is located closer to Russia. Especially for companies located in the Urals, supplies from Mongolia would be more convenient in terms of logistics,” said chairman of the Russian Meat Union Moushegh Mamikonian. Presently, Latin American countries account for about 80 percent of beef imports in Russia.
