Ts.Selenge: it is a pity people don’t know our achievements

By B.ODONTUYA

The following is a short interview with Ts.Selenge, creative director of the Mongolian National Circus about the International Circus Festival held in Khabarovsk, Russia where the circus recently participated.
-Could you talk about the new show which the National Circus of Mongolia is preparing for?
-We have started our training for the autumn season opening show. The first vacation of the pupils starts in November, so they are going to perform for them.
-How many performances are held a year at the National Circus Mongolia?
-We organize six or seven performances a year. Last year, we performed in the autumn season opening show, ‘Emerald country’ for children, on the occasion of the New Year, for International Women’s day, Naadam, and Children’s Day. We will conduct all of these performances again this year. We also take part in performances of rock and pop artists -not only circus performances.
-How many circus performers are there in the circus?
-There are 130-150 circus actors and actresses. Some of them have contracts in foreign countries, so half of them perform in Ulaanbaatar.
-I heard that the National Circus of Mongolia participated in the International Circus Festivalin Khabarovsk in Russia. How many members did the team comprise of?
-In a full circus show you need a team which has at least 20 actors. With this standard, we participated in the festival with a team of over 20 members including 15 circus performers and other technical workers. We gave our best performance which excited the audience. Our performance was very well-received by the audience and they kept clapping and applauding the whole time. The authorities’ of Khabarovsk city suggested cooperating with us.
-What was the performance?
-We participated in the festival with performances by an acrobatic team led by B.Zolbayar and circus performer Davaakhuu’s magic and skit performances.
-So can we assume that the circus art of Mongolia is close to world standards?
-The skills of Mongolian circus performers were appraised. The National Circus of Mongolia attends large international competitions every year. We take medals from every competition we participate in. But it is a pity that people don’t know our successes and achievements. The acrobats’ team led by B.Zolbayar is going to attend the Circus Latina festival which will be held from October 28 to November 4. A team with a leader A.Enkhtur is also preparing to compete in the Wuqiao International Circus Festival in China in November.
-It seems that audience numbers have decreased in the last few years. What actions is the circus taking to attract people?
-Firstly, we will hold a performance dedicated for children. We are aiming to perform more dramatic performances rather than just acrobatics and magic. World circus art pays much attention to the skills of the performer, but also to the costumes, make-up, and stage decoration. We are also working to improve our stages.
-How many animals does the circus have?
-We have no animals. We mainly bring trained animals from China for some performances. But the animals such as horses, bears, and lions will no longer be on the circus stage again.
